The music magazine, Billboard, recently released a list of the most powerful women in the music industry. The industry has quietly been dominated by women over the past decade and perhaps there is no woman less formative than Roc Nation COO, Desiree “Des” Perez. While Perez tends to purposefully stray from the spotlight, the enormous influence she has across the music world cannot be sheltered.
Those in the business recognize Des Perez as a fierce negotiator and business mogul who you do not want to be on the other side of in negotiations. She has been a close friend and confidant of music mogul Jay-Z for nearly 30 years and he named her COO of Roc Nation in 2009. She has successful led the company over the past decade and it has become one of the largest conglomerates in the world. Des recently negotiated a deal on the behalf of TIDAL, a music streaming service she also leads, with the telecommunications giant Sprint. The deal gave Sprint a 33% stake in TIDAL for a whopping sum of $200 million. The deal is already being lauded as a win for Roc Nation and TIDAL as they try to compete with Pandora and Spotify.
Desiree Perez has over 35 years of experience in the music and entertainment industry running Jay-Z’s SC Enterprises in the 1990s and 2000s. She also has extensive experience in managing nightclubs and music venues in the New York City area. She has negotiated deals such as Beyoncé’s Foundation Stadium deal and Rihanna’s Samsung deal. She also works with Roc Nation Sports in negotiating deals for athletes. She was the primary force behind the Seattle Mariners reaching a 10-year, $250 million deal with star 3rd baseman Robinson Cano. Perez runs Roc Nation with her husband Juan, who serves as President of Roc Nation Sports.
